Fighting Childhood Obesity Together
The increasing rates of obesity among children and adults in America offer compelling evidence to support broad-based initiatives to reverse this trend. Obesity prevention is a complex issue that requires changes not only in individual and family behaviors but also in the marketplace and society in general. The Institute of Medicine as part of a recent comprehensive report on the rising incidence of obesity explored a number of strategies within four broad arenas: “schools” – “communities” – “the home” – and the “industry, advertising and media sector.” The IOM recommended that each of these arena’s implement strategies to combat the issue. The food manufacturing, media and advertising industries are committed to helping find solutions and are working with parents, children, and all levels of government to support initiatives that have been designed to reverse obesity trends.
